FISA Foundation Report: Pittsburgh as a National Model

Over the past three years, Pittsburgh's arts and cultural community have reached out and opened doors to patrons with disabilities like never before. The Allegheny Regional Asset District, the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and many local theaters, museums and performing arts companies have taken great  strides toward creating access for all patrons. So much so that Betty Siegel, Director of Accessibility at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and national leader in promoting arts accessibility, describes Pittsburgh as a model for other regions.

Why is this a big deal? While there is a lot of work still to do, something important is working in our community, and we at FISA have learned a great deal from this process. We hope that you enjoy this report.According to the US Census Bureau, 37% of Pittsburghers older than 65 have a disability (including loss of vision, loss of hearing, increasing difficulties with mobility).  Many arts organizations readily admit that their season ticket holders are getting older.  Thus, making improvements in accessibility helps to retain current audiences as well as attract new patrons.

While there is a lot of work still to do, something important is working in our community, and those at FISA have learned a great deal from this process.
